Day 695 - The How of Teamwork

Between the heartfelt ‘why’ and the hands-on ‘what’ your team’s work lies the far more ethereal ‘how’. The ‘why’ gives everyone the motivation, the vision, the drive. The ‘what’ moves the needle. But the ‘how’? That’s a combination of slippery parameters.

The ‘how’ is your team’s culture. It’s the tone, and the methods by which the team expect one another to respond to a given situation. “We, in this team, tackle X by doing Y.”

The ‘how’, if poorly defined, can take the needle being moved and add a series of useless hinges to it. Get the ‘how’ wrong and that needle you are pushing may no longer point to the place your ‘why’ helped envisage in the first place.

The expectations, the hierarchy (if any), the records, the meeting times, the way ideas are shared and generated and heard. This list merely scratches the surface of your ‘how’. Have no doubt, it’s a worthwhile treasure to dig for.

Consider reviewing how your team works together so that your shared ‘why’ never falters.
